Gerald Matthews is Professor of Psychology at George Mason University.  He previously held faculty positions at the University of Dundee, in Scotland, and the University of Cincinnati. He was also Research Professor at the Institute for Simulation and Training at the University of Central Florida. His research interests combine human factors, stress and emotion, and individual differences. His contributions include developing the Dundee Stress State Questionnaire for measurement of task-induced stress, multivariate modeling of individual differences in sustained performance, contributing to the model of cognition and emotion that underpins Metacognitive Therapy, and developing the first major critique of "emotional intelligence". His research has been funded by multiple Department of Defense agencies, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity.

Gerald has been President of Division 13 (Traffic and Transportation and Psychology) of the International Association for Applied Psychology (IAAP) and of the International Society for the Study of Individual Differences (ISSID).
